            Description

            • Fretting corrosion results from the oxidation of wear particles that form between two surfaces experiencing small amplitude vibrations under load
            • The surfaces will have a reddish brown to black appearance
            • For stationary bearing rings the fretting pattern can give an indication of the size of the load zone and the adequacy of the bearing seat

            Causes

            • Fretting corrosion is common on loose fit bearing rings and is to some extent unavoidable. The severity of the corrosion varies with application.
